Smash a killer toastie at Toledo with Tweet
Everyone loves a good toasty and we think Toledo has the best in town. This chilled out little Brunswick cafe recently underwent a mini-expansion so it’s now a little bit more roomie but with the same friendly faces. Toledo is a locals spot and if last night was big one they do a mean bacon and eggs that will get you fully functioning again.
Byron: Please introduce yourself.
Tweet: My name is Veronica but I got by Tweet, I’m a Brunswick local and I am owner operator at Toledo Brunswick.
Chris: Is there a specific theme in the cafe, something you try and emphasize?
Tweet: Nothing we are trying to push over anything else, but we hope it’s just a pretty cool place to relax and have some breakfast or lunch and it’s pretty much all about the toasties, you can eat them here they are pretty easy to take away as well.

Byron: I have actually had a few of those toasties myself and they are serious toasties, stacked with meat! They’re a record breaker.
Chris: How many staff are employed here at the cafe?
Tweet: Myself, another chef and three casual staff on the coffee machine.
Chris: So Toledo the name of the restaurant, that’s a place in Spain isn’t it? Is it a favourite place you have visited?
Tweet: It’s a place in Spain and it’s also a place in America but that’s not the inspiration for the name. Toledo is also a brand of commercial kitchen stuff, scales, meat slices that sort of thing and that’s my background my grandad was a butcher hence the old meat grinder in the cafe, my grandad made it.
Byron: What kind of customers come through the door?
Tweet: Locals, all locals, it’s rare we wouldn’t recognise a face.
Chris: How long have you been in Brunswick and what has kept you here?
Tweet: About 20 years, I have tried moving further south but I always seem to gravitate back here. I have actually seen the suburb grow, particularly East Brunswick Lygon Street. I’ve seen this area grow pretty much from nothing, it was just warehouses, there were no apartments, no bars, no cafes, nothing. I’ve seen it grow and actually start to boom.
Byron: What do you love about Brunswick and do you have a favourite place?
Tweet: It’s pretty chill, Mr Wilkinson is my go to bar, I love going there to enjoy either a glass of red or rosé.
Chris: Thank you very much Tweet, we appreciate you having us in your great little cafe and we will definitely be back again for one of those toasted sandwiches.
Toledo is located at 116 Albert St, Brunswick. We really recommend stopping by and saying hello to Tweet or one of her friendly staff, once you smell one of those toasties cooking you won’t be able to resist getting your hands on one.
